Classic Vanilla Fudge

Introduction

Classic Vanilla Fudge is a rich, creamy confection made by cooking sugar, butter, and sweetened condensed milk until thick, then cooling it into smooth, melt-in-your-mouth squares. It’s a timeless homemade treat that’s perfect for holidays, gift boxes, and dessert platters.

Ingredients

  • 1 can (14 oz / 397 g) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups (400 g) granulated sugar
  • ½ cup (115 g) unsalted butter
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional Additions

  • ½ cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • White chocolate chips
  • A pinch of cinnamon
  • Sea salt flakes for topping

Instructions

  1. Line an 8-inch (20 cm) square pan with parchment paper.
  2. In a heavy saucepan, combine the sweetened condensed milk, sugar, butter, and salt.
  3. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly until the butter melts and the mixture comes to a gentle boil.
  4. Continue cooking, stirring frequently, until the mixture reaches 235–240°F (113–116°C) on a candy thermometer (soft-ball stage).
  5. Remove from the heat and let it cool undisturbed for about 5 minutes.
  6. Add the vanilla extract.
  7. Beat the mixture with a wooden spoon until it thickens and loses its glossy appearance.
  8. Pour into the prepared pan and smooth the top.
  9. Let cool completely for 2–3 hours.
  10. Cut into small squares and serve.

Tips for Success

  • Use a candy thermometer for the best texture.
  • Stir continuously while cooking to prevent scorching.
  • Avoid overcooking, which can make the fudge crumbly.
  • Store in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks at room temperature or refrigerate for longer freshness.
