Easy Cheesy Ground Beef Puff Pastry Twists

Ingredients

Puff pastry: Use 2 sheets of frozen puff pastry, thawed according to the package directions. Keep them refrigerated until you are ready to assemble the twists.

Ground beef: You will need 1 pound of ground beef. A lean blend works well because it produces less grease inside the pastry.

Olive oil and onion: Prepare 1 tablespoon olive oil and ½ small onion, finely diced. Small onion pieces blend easily into the filling.

Fresh garlic: Mince 2 garlic cloves. These add savory flavor without overpowering the cheese.

Seasonings: Measure 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning, ½ teaspoon smoked paprika, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper.

Worcestershire sauce: Add 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce for a deeper, richer beef flavor.

Mozzarella: Use 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese. Low-moisture mozzarella melts well without making the pastry too wet.

Cheddar: Add ½ cup shredded cheddar cheese for extra flavor. Combine it with the mozzarella before assembling.

Egg wash: Beat 1 large egg with 1 tablespoon water. This gives the pastry a glossy, golden finish.

Instructions

Preheat the oven: Set the oven to 400°F (200°C). Position a rack near the middle for even baking.

Prepare the baking sheets: Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Leave enough room to space the twists apart.

Cook the onion: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the diced onion and cook for 3–4 minutes, until softened.

Brown the beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet. Break it into small crumbles and cook until browned and cooked through.

Drain the grease: Carefully drain any excess fat from the skillet. A relatively dry filling helps the pastry become crisp.

Add the seasonings: Stir in the garlic, Italian seasoning, smoked paprika, salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce. Cook for another minute, stirring well.

Cool the filling: Spread the beef mixture onto a large plate so it cools quickly. Let it cool before placing it on the pastry.

Prepare the pastry: Lightly flour your work surface and unfold both pastry sheets. Gently roll them into matching rectangles without making them too thin.

Add the beef: Spread the cooled filling evenly over one pastry sheet, leaving a ½-inch border. Avoid thick piles that could make twisting difficult.

Add the cheese: Sprinkle the mozzarella and cheddar evenly over the beef. Keep most of the cheese inside the pastry border.

Cover the filling: Lay the second pastry sheet over the top. Press gently across the surface, then pinch the outer edges together.

Chill briefly: If the pastry has softened, refrigerate the filled pastry for 15–20 minutes. Cold pastry is easier to cut and handle.

Cut the strips: Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut 10–12 strips, approximately 1 inch wide. Cut straight down to preserve the pastry layers.

Shape the twists: Hold each strip carefully at both ends and twist it two or three times. Transfer to the baking sheets, leaving about 2 inches between pieces.

Brush and bake: Brush the exposed pastry lightly with egg wash. Bake for 20–25 minutes, or until well puffed, deeply golden, and cooked through; thicker twists may need longer.

Rest and serve: Let the twists cool on the baking sheet for 5 minutes. Serve warm with marinara sauce or your favorite dip.

Variation

Garlic Parmesan: Sprinkle 2 tablespoons grated Parmesan over the egg-washed twists before baking. Add a pinch of garlic powder for extra garlic flavor.

Mushroom and Swiss: Cook ½ cup finely chopped mushrooms with the onion until their moisture evaporates. Cool the filling and replace the cheddar with shredded Swiss cheese.

Spicy cheese: Replace the cheddar with pepper Jack cheese. Add a pinch of red pepper flakes to the beef for gentle heat.

Pizza-inspired: Add 2 tablespoons thick pizza sauce to the cooked beef and let excess moisture cook off. Use mozzarella and serve with extra sauce on the side.

Ground turkey: Substitute ground turkey for the beef and cook it thoroughly before assembling. Keep the same seasonings and cheese combination.

Mini appetizer twists: Cut shorter strips to make smaller portions. Begin checking them after 15 minutes, and bake until golden and cooked through.

Storage

Refrigerating leftovers: Let the twists cool, then place them in an airtight container and refrigerate promptly. Enjoy within 3 days.

Reheating: Warm refrigerated twists in a 350°F (175°C) oven for approximately 10–15 minutes, until hot throughout. This helps restore their crisp exterior.

Freezing: Freeze cooled, baked twists in a single layer, then transfer them to a freezer bag or sealed container. Use within 2 months for the best texture.

Reheating from frozen: Place frozen twists on a lined baking sheet and heat at 350°F (175°C) until hot throughout, approximately 20–25 minutes. Cover loosely with foil if they brown too quickly.
