Ingredients
For the Bake:
· 2 cans (8 oz each) refrigerated crescent roll dough (or crescent sheets, if available)
· 8 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
· 1/2 cup granulated sugar
· 1 large egg
· 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
· 1 can (21 oz) premium cherry pie filling
For the Creamy Glaze (The “Sauce”):
· 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream (or half-and-half)
· 1/4 cup whole milk
· 1/2 cup powdered sugar (adjust to taste)
· 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
· Pinch of salt
Instructions
Preheat and Prep: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a deep 2-quart glass casserole dish with non-stick spray or butter.
Make the Cheesecake Filling: In a medium mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese and granulated sugar together until smooth and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until fully incorporated. Set aside.
Prepare the Dough: Open the crescent roll cans. Do not unroll them into individual triangles. Instead, slice the dough logs into roughly 1-inch thick rounds.
Layer the Base: Arrange half of the crescent roll slices in a single layer on the bottom of the prepared baking dish, pressing them slightly together to form a base.
Add the Cream and Cherries: Dollop half of the cream cheese mixture over the dough layer, spreading it gently. Spoon half of the cherry pie filling over the cream cheese, swirling it slightly with a knife.
Repeat Layers: Top with the remaining crescent roll slices, followed by the rest of the cream cheese mixture and the remaining cherry pie filling.
Bake: Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes. The dough should be puffed up, deep golden brown, and cooked through. Note: If the tops are browning too quickly, tent the dish loosely with aluminum foil.
Make the Creamy Sauce: While the bake is in the oven, whisk together the heavy cream, milk, powdered sugar, vanilla, and salt in a small bowl until smooth. For a thicker sauce, use less milk; for a thinner drizzle, add a splash more milk.
Finish and Serve: Remove the bake from the oven and immediately pour the creamy sauce evenly over the hot dessert, allowing it to seep into the crevices and pool at the bottom. Let it rest for 5–10 minutes before serving warm.
Variations
· Berry Medley: Swap the cherry pie filling for a mixed berry compote, blueberry filling, or a homemade strawberry-rhubarb mixture for a different fruity profile.
· Apple Cinnamon Twist: Use apple pie filling instead of cherry. Add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon to the cream cheese mixture and drizzle the finished bake with a maple-flavored glaze.
· Chocolate Cherry: Add 1/2 cup of mini chocolate chips to the cream cheese mixture and sprinkle a few over the top before baking for a decadent, Black Forest-inspired treat.
· Nutty Crunch: Sprinkle 1/2 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts over the top layer of cherry filling before baking to add a toasty texture.
· Lemon Zest: Add 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon zest to the cheesecake filling to brighten the flavor and cut through the richness.
Storage
· Refrigerator: Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 days. Because of the dairy in the cream cheese and the creamy sauce, it must be refrigerated.
· Reheating: For the best texture, reheat individual portions in the microwave for 30–45 seconds until warm and gooey. You can also reheat the entire dish, covered with foil, in a 300°F (150°C) oven for 10–15 minutes.
· Freezing (Not Recommended): While you can freeze the baked dessert, the texture of the cream cheese and the glaze may separate and become grainy upon thawing.
If you must freeze it, do so before adding the final creamy sauce, tightly wrapped, for up to 2 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge and add fresh sauce before serving.
